The Danville Historical Society participated in the Vermont Expo on June 16 and 17, 2012, in Tunbridge, Vermont. This event, held every two years, focused on Vermont in the Civil War and is sponsored by the Vermont Historical Society.
Danville’s booth, entitled Mills, Morgans and Movers included information on our celebrated war heroes, Capt. Charles Brainerd and Col. Addison Preston, as well as the portrait of Thaddeus Stevens, who was born in Danville. It also paid tribute to the North Star, the Greenbank’s Hollow Mill, which contracted with the Union for the making of blue woolen uniform cloth, and Morgan horses, a favorite mount in the war, some of which were raised and trained in Danville.
“If I had it to do over again,” said Patty Conly, the new Danville Historical Society President, “I would come for two days–one day to man the booth and one day to take in the whole event.” Others tending the booth felt the same way. It was an extraordinary experience and well worth the hour and a half drive from Danville.
